CONTRACT manufacturing specialist MTL is targeting new orders from defence contractors after securing Supply Chain 21st Century accreditation with the help of the Manufacturing Advisory Service.

SC21 – as the accreditation is known – is recognised by all the major prime defence contractors

“The journey towards accreditation enabled us to streamline many of our processes,” says Dr Henry Shirman, who led a management buy out at the firm in 2006.

SInce then, sales have trebled to £50 million, 200 jobs have been created and the company has moved to a new site with room for growth.

“Our customers certainly recognised this achievement, which is a vital component of our success as 40 per cent of our turnover comes from defence customers,” adds Dr Shirman, who praises the Manufacturing Advisory Service for the key role it played in helping MTL to secure its SC21 accreditation.

“We really didn’t know the best way to go about achieving SC21 and it made sense to call in the experts,” said Dr Shirman.

MAS put MTL in touch with consultants TEC-Concepts and helped to fund the introduction of SC21 at the firm. Now MTL is planning to gain further accreditations with MAS’s help.
