MP backs idea of using tunnels to connect cities

MP Angela Smith said building a new tunnel - or reopening disused ones - could help improve rail links between Sheffield and Manchester.

The Penistone and Stocksbridge MP said: “There is a consensus that transport connections between Sheffield and Manchester are in need of major improvement and the possibility of a new or re-opened tunnel between Manchester and Sheffield would be massively beneficial to both the Sheffield and Manchester city regions.”

She said Sheffield could be put at a ‘massive economic disadvantage’ if connections are improved only between Leeds and Manchester.
