TWO young Doncaster lads revelled in star status to carry out an opening ceremony for a supermarket.

Mark Moran and Darren Alexander, who are both involved with the charity Mencap, were drafted in by the Co-op to attend the event at the store in Askern.

The shop, on Selby Road, has re-opened after the company carried out a £260,000 revamp on the premises, intended to bring the shop firmly into the 21st century.

Youngsters from Mencap were chosen to carry out the opening duties because the organisation is the Co-operative group’s charity of the year.

They cut the ribbon with store manager Keith Boyall to mark the occasion.

The charity will receive a donation of £200 for its help.

Keith said: “As a community retailer it is appropriate we involve the community in our special events and we are delighted Mencap is playing a central role in the relaunch of our store.”
