Bosses at Meadowhall have received a top award for the shopping centre’s environmental initiatives.
The centre was given the gold award for sustainability at the 2014 British Council for Shopping Centres awards in London.
Judges praised Meadowhall for its effective and continuous commitment to environmental initiatives.
Meadowhall centre director Darren Pearce, who attended the annual ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, said: “These awards are truly prestigious and highly regarded by our industry and we are delighted that the team has been recognised for its commitment to sustainability.
“We work extremely hard to lead the way with ideas and solutions to make Meadowhall as environmentally friendly as possible from harvesting rain water, to our on-site recycling centre and public transport links - we pride ourselves on being a green shopping centre.”
Meadowhall receives more than 50 per cent of its water consumption from harvested rain water and during the summer a bore hole, drilled into the ground, extracts water from an underground river.
The centre also has an on-site recycling facility and recycling levels have doubled to 60 per cent.
