Lots of energy

Have your say

It has been dubbed the largest single sustainable energy project in the UK.

The EcoIsland project aims to create a renewable energy system on the Isle of Wight and has attracted blue chip names like IBM, Toshiba, Cable & Wireless Worldwide and Scottish and Southern Energy, as well as ITM Power.

A range of renewable energy systems is being installed on the island and will be distributed using a “smart grid” that will monitor and manage customer demand.

ITM Power will take excess energy from the grid and use it to generate hydrogen which will fuel cars provided by Toyota and Hyundai, and some hydrogen powered catamarans, built by Cheetah Marine and powered by petrol outboard motors modified by ITM and Cheetah to run on hydrogen.
