Leading stores among customers

WAITROSE, Tesco, Sainsbury and Morrisons are among the leading supermarket chains that rely on Birley Manufacturing Solutions to supply displays, equipment and services for their stores.

The family-owned firm can handle everything from shop floor and restaurant layouts to designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke displays and equipment, including all the stainless steel equipment found behind food counters.

Birley will even provide internal building services ranging from constructing internal walls and installing services to tiling and coordinating delivery and installation of equipment from other suppliers, through its project management arm.

The firm has also developed a range of secure cigarette cabinets for supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations, which can quickly be modified to comply with restrictions on the display of tobacco products as they come into force. Top jewellers and accessory stores are also among its clients.

While Birley has successfully reduced its reliance on retail, there is still business to be had in the sector for a company like Birley that prides itself on keeping to the tight deadlines necessary to ensure retail clients see no disruption to sales.

“We may still be in a recession, but it hasn’t affected supermarkets as much as some other retailers.

“They are still converting stores, opening new convenience stores and expanding existing supermarkets,” says Birley’s managing director, Steve English.

“We’ve been involved in some quite big roll out programmes – sometimes having to go in, do the work overnight and get out so that they can be operational the next day. It’s an unforgiving environment and you have got to deliver every time.”

Birley also works for leading high street banks designing and manufacturing everything from reception desks to conference room tables and arm chairs to display units for wall mounted video screens.

Customers include RBS, Barclays and HSBC, for whom Birley has worked for 20 years, recently collaborating with the bank’s design team to manufacture and install furniture for the roll out of it Premier banking service nationwide and internationally.

Birley is also building up its presence in the leisure sector, working at coffee shops and fitness centres, for leading hotel brands like Copthorne and at Meadowhall, developing a range of bespoke items, including dividing walls with cedar cladding and fixed seating for the leading shopping complex’s popular Oasis food court.
