Conservative Party grandee and former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Michael Heseltine has urged the country to ‘keep faith’ in the planned £43 billion HS2 high speed rail project linking London with the north, including Sheffield.

He said: “HS2 is about our country’s competitiveness for a half century or more.”

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Sheffield Council Liberal Democrat opposition leader, has written to all Sheffield MPs asking them to sign a letter to Labour leader Ed Miliband calling on him to back the HS2 project.
