Furniture retailer E Barker and Son (Hillsboro) has completed work on a £400,000 expansion and new showroom on Lowther Road, with backing from NatWest Commercial Banking.

The new premises, branded Simply Sofas, aims to appeal to the younger end of the market and will be the firm’s fourth showrooms in the city.

The group, which trades as Barker’s Furniture, was founded in 1931 and Neil Barker, who has headed the firm since 1999 is the fourth generation of the Barker family to run the business.

He said: “We’ve seen a turbulent period with the whole country in recession but, by maintaining our high standards and providing our customers with value for money, we’ve been able to emerge with a very positive outlook for 2011 underlined by this expansion.”

His mother, and fellow director, Sheila, added: “In March 2000 we purchased our bedroom and flooring centre site and here, 11 years on we’re expanding again with this fantastic new showroom.

“I’m really proud of what we have achieved here over many decades and this is yet another step forward in our continuous growth.”

Graham Nevin, senior relationship manager for NatWest Commercial banking said: “Barkers Furniture is a long-established family business that is a big retail name here in Sheffield.

“It’s been a pleasure to support this expansion.”
