Indians call on S Yorks skills

Engineers from South Yorkshire have helped an Indian steel firm out of a fix after a Korean plant manufacturer collapsed.

Tata subsidiary Tayo Rolls called in PJH Engineering Solutions, based at Wales, in Rotherham, after the financial collapse of a Korean forging press supplier threatened the Indian supplier of cast rolls for steel production's bid to move into making higher performance forged rolls.

The Koreans had installed a new press with integrated forging manipulator at Tayo's plant in Gamharia, however, the Korean equipment had numerous faults and was not commissioned for safe, reliable operation,

Tayo sought help from PJH, an established supplier to Tata Group, with has an international reputation for solving metal forming problems.

PJH quickly sent experts to Gamharia, close to India's steel city of Jamshedpur, which was established by Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, the Indian entrepreneur and industrialist who founded the Tata group and died in 1904.

The teams from the UK and India got Tayo's new forge operating manually, allowing the company to gain operating experience and meet customer orders while PJH Engineering developed a long term solution.

With almost no technical information available, PJH had to map the forging equipment's complex mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems and write new control software to make best use of the existing hardware.

PJH also replaced the original operator control panels with a state of the art graphical user interface, including touch screens and mimic displays, to make operation more user friendly and commissioned the system, giving Tayo a full automated production facility.
