The famous St Leger and Doncaster’s proud association with the oldest classic is reflected throughout the hotel, which has occupied Doncaster’s High Street since 1809.

Britain’s Got Talent star Alexandra Parker entertained guests, including Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones, at the event.

Doncaster Chamber welcomed the project, which has created 18 new jobs in the borough. Dan Fell, CEO of Doncaster Chamber, said: “It is pleasing to see another international brand investing in Doncaster and recognising that the town has a strong and growing tourist offering, with excellent attractions such as the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Doncaster Racecourse on the doorstep.

“The building is an iconic feature of the town centre and has now secured a future for itself as part of the Mercure brand.”

Hotel spokesman Jonathan Sheard said: “This hotel is a really iconic hotel in Doncaster and we are very excited for it to be opening as a Mercure-branded property.

“It celebrates everything which is exceptional about Mercure with a building that is in harmony with the people and place.
“The refurbishment is stunning – we can’t wait for people to see it.”

The transformation includes the opening of Anthony’s Bar and Restaurant, named after Lieutenant-Colonel Anthony Ledger, founder of the St Leger Stakes horse race, which is held annually at Doncaster Racecourse.
