How business listings have been produced

In order to be included in the Star Business/Sheffield University Management School Top 50 Manufacturers listing, companies must be independent businesses, holding companies in a UK group or the ultimate UK company of an overseas-controlled group.

Companies must be based in Sheffield, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster or Rotherham, which, for the purposes of this survey, is defined as having a principal trading addresses or registered office with one of these postcodes: S1-S79, S82-S99, DN1-DN13, DN23-DN30, DN38-DN39, and DE45.

For the purpose of this table, companies involved in food processing, construction and related industries have been excluded although they may be described as manufacturers.

Figures have been compiled by Sheffield University Management School using the latest publicly available accounts data. Every effort has been made to ensure the details are as comprehensive and accurate as possible, but there may be businesses that feel they have been unjustly left out.

One of the most likely reasons is the business isn’t registered in South Yorkshire and there are no figures for its South Yorkshire operations.

Only companies whose turnover was high enough to justify a Top 50 listing are included in the analysis which created the profit and employment tables.

Companies whose telephone numbers are marked with a * have registered with The Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS). It is a legal requirement that companies do not make unsolicited calls to numbers registered on the CTPS.
