A developer says its housing plan for a former industrial site will be sensitive’ and in keeping with the surrounding area’.
Avant Homes wants to built 62 homes on the former Dyson Industries factory known as Griff Works, in Stopes Road, Stannington.
Although a former industrial site, the land is within the green belt, and the plans have attracted opposition from residents and environmental campaigners.
But the developer insists it has been working hard to make sure the site fits in with rural Stannington.
A company spokesman said: “We have worked very closely with planners and the council for the last 12 months to ensure that our revised proposals for the former Griff Works site will provide sensitive re-development of the land, which remains in keeping with the surrounding area.
“Our new application proposal for 62 homes is a 30 per cent reduction on our previously approved application and much time has been spent considering the mix and style of properties for the development, taking into consideration sustainable features and its position within the green belt.
“We are a responsible housebuilder with a proven track record in redeveloping disused brownfield sites such as this one, which has been deteriorating for many years, into a high quality development of innovatively-designed homes.
“Whilst we acknowledge the concerns of local residents and conservationists we want to reassure them that we are committed to delivering a thoughtful collection of properties that improve upon the current setting and blend seamlessly with the locality to meet the needs of the local community and its future generations.”
