A DONCASTER hospital has emerges as the biggest employer among the Sheffield City Region’s leading small and medium sized enterprises.
Riverside Healthcare employs 325 people and was set up to run Cheswold Park Hospital, which opened five years ago a low-to-medium-secure 96-bed private psychiatric unit, providing secure housing, treatment and rehabilitation for men with schizophrenia and other mental health problems.
Riverside has overtaken last year’s leading SME employer, Excel Parking Services, which provides a range of car park management services and products from its base in Sheffield and Barnsley-based discount store group Company Shop.
Perhaps surprisingly, around two thirds of the top employers come from manufacturing, rather than the service sector.
Fosters Bakery at Staincross leads the way for the manufacturers with around 220 employees, while double glazing, composite doors and conservatories group YWC, emerges as the biggest SME employer in Rotherham.
Meanwhile, Wales Bar-based precision engineer CW Fletcher, whose customers can be found in the aerospace, nuclear and related industries, emerges as the biggest SME in the Sheffield postal district, ahead of Darnall-based Geo Robson and Carrs of Sheffield, the Holbrook-based cutlery and silver giftware specialist.
Chesterfield’s biggest Top 100 SME employer emerges as the Accession Group, whose headquarters is the base for Eve, the construction group that specialises in supplying temporary roads and walkways, barriers and fencing, traffic management systems and security services.
