Transport chiefs in South Yorkshire have welcomed the announcement of new laws in the Queen’s Speech to help make the planned high speed rail network a reality.
Neil Chadwick, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive’s acting director of strategy, said: “We welcome the announcement a High Speed Rail enabling bill will be introduced to Parliament over the coming year.
“This is a hugely significant move for the Sheffield City Region as it will lay the ground for the first new mainline railway to the north of England since the 19th century.
“To reap the maximum benefits, the South Yorkshire station must be as well connected to the city region as it can possibly be. This work must begin now.
“We’re ready and keen to work with the Government to make this happen.”
