Sheffield’s airport barely got off the ground - but would an expansion of Heathrow Airport give wings to Sheffield City Region businesses?
That will be the question debated at an event in Sheffield.
The British Chambers of Commerce and Heathrow Airport have organised events across the country to hear business opinion on the aviation capacity debate. Sheffield Chamber will host this region’s One Hub or None seminar on September 11.
Chair of the Sheffield Chamber Transport Forum and chairman of local business Champion Hire Ltd is against the plan and would prefer to see expansion of Doncaster Sheffield Airport: “A further expansion of Heathrow is a crazy idea. It will further concentrate resources in the south once again,” he said. “Doncaster Airport has an enormous runway and room for massive expansion of freight and passengers.”
New research from Frontier Economics reveals lack of capacity at Heathrow is already costing the UK up to £14bn a year in lost trade, a figure which could rise to £26bn a year by 2030. Supporters claim increasing Heathrow’s freight capacity will give Britain’s manufacturers a competitive advantage when accessing new export markets.
Participants at the free Sheffield debate will have the chance to question Heathrow Airport’s executives. Information on the 7.45-10am event is at www.scci.org.uk/events
