A PENSIONER is in hospital with serious head injuries - after trying to prevent a burglary being committed near his South Yorkshire home.
Detectives are appealing for help after the OAP was assaulted when he intervened to stop a break-in at an off-licence.
The 65-year-old heard noises coming from an alleyway at the side of his property on Warmsworth Road, Balby, Doncaster, and went to investigate.
When he reached the alleyway he saw two males apparently trying to burgle the shop. He tried to intervene, but the males struck him in the face and ran off towards Doncaster town centre.
The man suffered a fractured cheekbone and concussion in the attack in the early hours of New Year’s Day, and was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where he remains.
