n The group which speaks on behalf of the bulk of Britain’s coal producers has appointed a new director general.
Career mining man Phil Garner, 58, has succeeded David Brewer as head of the Confederation of UK Coal Producers (CoalPro).
Mr Garner is a former colliery manager, production and mining director and commercial director who has spent 37 years in the industry, with British Coal and UK COAL.
He said: “Coal still plays an important part in meeting Britain’s energy needs, and can do so for many years to come.”
“The coal we produce in the UK from our deep and surface mines reduces imports and the nation’s reliance on fuels from other countries and supports around 20,000 jobs in mining and related industries.”
