The UK’s first two megawatt lithium titanate battery is to be connected to the grid later this year, as part of research to tackle the challenges of industrial-scale energy storage.

The project – led by the University of Sheffield – aims to test the technological and economic challenges of using large scale batteries to provide support to the grid.

Energy generators worldwide are increasingly looking at large batteries for storing excess electricity from renewable sources, but their high- capital costs means uptake is still low.
