A GERMAN firm has been selected as the lead bidder to construct new tram trains set to run between Sheffield and Rotherham.

Transport minister Norman Baker revealed during an event organised by the House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group that Vossloh Locomotives provided the best value for the project.

The business case for the tram trains is still being developed, but the Department for Transport is supportive and train operator Northern Rail, which is procuring the vehicles, anticipates services will begin in 2014.

The project involves running services from Sheffield city centre using the supertram line to Meadowhall, then the freight railway through Templeborough to Rotherham and Parkgate.
