You’re probably familiar with this company’s products without even realising it - it makes 35m bricks a year.

Carlton Main Brickworks at Grimethorpe in Barnsley is a privately-owned factory on a site with a 125-year history of brick making.

It is the 9th most profitable SME in Barnsley, making £1.35m profit, according to its latest accounts. But it is poised to build on its success.

Earlier this year, the firm, which employs 68, moved all its banking to Barclays, including trade finance facilities, a commitment to support investment, foreign exchange and improved money transmission services

At the time, chairman Oliver Stephenson said the bank had given him confidence that it remained committed to the industry

The factory runs seven days-a-week apart from at Christmas. Customers include builders, architects, councils and the public.
