Sheffield Council hopes to transform the city’s fortunes with the scheme – and work will start next month.

Phase one includes a six-storey 15,000 sq m office block, which will be HSBC’s new Sheffield headquarters.

Deputy leader Leigh Bramall said HSBC’s support was “key”. He added: “Sheffield is really coming into its own as the ideal place for businesses to locate.

“With the recent announcement of the city centre HS2 station and its growing reputation for offering the great lifestyle of The Outdoor City, the next few years are looking very exciting for Sheffield.”

Deputy leader Leigh Bramall said Sheffield city centre needed ‘much more than just new shops’.

“We need top quality office space to bring in the businesses and workers to spend money in those shops,” he said. “We need cafes for meetings, restaurants and bars for people to socialise in after work. We need attractive public spaces like the Peace Gardens where people can sit to have their lunch. We need homes for city centre workers. These are all the things that Sheffield Retail Quarter will offer.”

Demolition of the vacant Grosvenor House Hotel and surrounding shops will begin next month. Once the public consultation closes on August 9, the council will submit a detailed planning application for phase one. An outline application for the whole scheme, submitted in 2015, must also be approved.

Subject to planning approval, construction on phase one could start in 2017 with a target completion date of early 2019.

Coun Bramall added: “This development provides the perfect link from The Moor, through to the future phases of the retail quarter, to the rest of the city centre.”
