First grows rail business

A RAIL firm running through South Yorkshire has seen bumper passenger growth of 8.5 per cent compared with last year as people ditched their cars amid soaring petrol prices.

First TransPennine Express, which runs an hourly service from Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport calling at Sheffield and Doncaster, saw passenger revenue increase in the three months to June 30.

But First’s UK bus business, which includes South Yorkshire, saw a slight drop in passenger numbers as fewer people made shopping trips amid the decline in consumer spending.

However, fare increases helped like-for-like revenues rise by 0.7 per cent and shares in First increased by seven per cent after the announcement.
