A 90-bed climbers’ hotel is set to open in Sheffield close to a hub of outdoor industry businesses.

A Victorian factory on Mowbray Street is set to be converted to create domitories and lounges aimed at young people, sports teams and schools.

The road is also home to The Foundry climbing gym and mountaineering and expedition firm Jagged Globe, which is behind the plans.

Managing director Simon Lowe, said: “We will provide the excellence and security of a high-end boutique hotel, mixed with the cost-effectiveness of multi-bedded rooms and the communal spaces that people enjoy when visiting a traditional youth hostel.”

The application comes as Sheffield hailed itself ‘outdoor capital of the UK’ after research showed the indsutry is worth £53m-a-year.

The city will host two of Europe’s biggest outdoor events in 2015 - the European Outdoor Summit and the International Adventure Conference.

Paul Hind, of Coda architects said: “There is nothing in Sheffield tailored to short term visitors that gives a sense of safety and community. We think it’s new.”
