MORE than 8,000 homes and businesses in Sheffield now have a faster connection to the internet following upgrading work to telephone lines.
The faster broadband service has been rolled out in Oughtibridge and Greenhill, made possible because of improvements to copper wires carried out by BT.
The communications firm says the upgrades mean computer users will enjoy download speeds of up to 20 megabits per second, more than double the fastest speed previously available.
Faster broadband is already available in Sheffield communities including Woodseats, Broomhill, Intake, Beauchief and Ranmoor. By next Spring, a new exchange will have been brought into operation to help deliver the higher speeds.
John Anderson, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Faster broadband is touching the lives of everyone and transforming the way we do things, for the better. BT is committed to making the technology available to as many homes and businesses as possible, as quickly as possible.
“But there is still much work to be done and we want to work with local authorities to find ways of getting to even the most challenging locations.”
