Extra bus gate planned for city centre street

A NEW bus gate with camera enforcement is to be introduced in Sheffield.

Sheffield Council’s cabinet highways committee is set to approve the proposals for South Lane, which runs from Cumberland Street to St Mary’s Gate and is a main route into the city centre.

The bus gate would ban general traffic from South Lane in the Cumberland Street direction, after the junction with Young Street, between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday.

Sheffield Council said the bus gate is needed to enforce Cumberland Street being a buses only route - but requirements for a well-signed ‘escape route’ means the restriction needs to be on South Lane instead.

David Whitley, Sheffield Council highways officer, said in a report to the committee: “Enforcement of restrictions on Cumberland Street is a planning condition of the new markets building. This scheme improves bus journey time reliability.”

Bus gates at Hillsborough, Glossop Road, Bridge Street and The Wicker are already enforced with cameras.

The South Lane plans will be discussed at a meeting of the committee on Thursday.
