Some of the fastest people and vehicles in the world are taking part in this year’s Global Manufacturing Festival as part of a drive to encourage more young people to become engineers.

The “Get up to Speed” event is aimed at young people, parents and teachers and designed to illustrate the fundamental role that design, engineering and manufacturing in the Sheffield region has played in their success.

On show will be the fastest boat on the planet – the Vestas Sailrocket – accompanied by pilot Paul Larsen, a Marussia Racing Formula 1 car and simulator a skeleton bobsleigh simulator and 3D Virtual Reality centre.

Speaking at the event will be former Women’s Bobsleigh world champion Nicola Minichiello, Lois Rosindale and Gordon Benson from the British triathlon performance team and members of the ground and flight crew of the Vulcan bomber.

Engineering and manufacturing businesses will be at the event, which takes place on Wednesday, March 21 at Ekspan’s Blue Shed site, off Brightside Lane.
