Master Cutler Tony Pedder has called on engineers to join forces with other experts to help solve the world’s problems.
The Sheffield Forgemasters chairman told guests at the Yorkshire Region of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ annual dinner that advanced engineering would become the principal science required to support life on this planet.
“For engineers, the challenge is clear,” said Mr Pedder, speaking at the dinner in the Cutlers’ Hall.
“New solutions are required to address complex global problems. Innovation is required as we continue to re-engineer our world.
“If we get it right, there is a real opportunity for the UK to be where it has been before, at the forefront of an impending global engineering demand explosion.
“If we get it right, we in the UK can, at the same time as participating strongly in this global growth, also achieve a much needed rebalancing of our own economy away from over-dependence on the service sector.”
Mr Pedder cited climate change, energy security, food production and health as key challenges where engineers had a vital role.
