Small firms from Sheffield have been urged to seize “huge opportunities” to raise their profile and win new business through the web.
The call came from entrepreneur Doug Richard, one of the first members of the panel of investors on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den, speaking at a seminar in the city, designed to help firms become “web-fuelled businesses”. Mr Richard said small firms needed to learn how to make themselves more visible on the internet, not just through good web design and search engine optimisation but also to take advantage of the “democratisation” of the web brought about by social media.”
Then, they needed to develop ways of getting visitors to their web sites to do what they wanted them to do.
Mr Richard praised the businesses attending the seminar – one of 15 he is staging around the country – for being enthusiastic and “asking great questions”.
Businesses taking part in the seminar ranged from a company specialising in tai chi to manufacturers.
