Doncaster Council has signed a five year, £1 million-plus contract with South Yorkshire’s superfast broadband initiative, Digital Region, for it to provide communication networks covering council buildings and Doncaster schools.
The switchover will take a year to complete, result in savings of £100,000 a year and will give the council accreditation to a new Government standard, aimed at ensuring public sector organisations get the best voice and data technology and related ICT services at cost effective prices.
Doncaster Council cabinet member for finance and corporate services, Coun Mark Thompson, said: “It is important to Doncaster Council that we make next generation technology readily available and educate people to understand what the Internet can offer them.
“We know over eight million adults in the UK have never used the Internet – 17.5 per cent of the population – and it is those people who haven’t used the Internet in Doncaster who we hope to get online via the Digital Region network and show them what it can do for them.”
n Doncaster is home to the Digital Region’s Network Operation Centre.
