A LEADING Rotherham councillor visited one of the town’s training centres to see how apprentices are being prepared for skilled engineering jobs.

Coun Gerald Smith, the cabinet member for regeneration, visited the Brinsworth Academy of Engineering on Sheffield Road.

The academy has secured a record number of vacancies for apprentices despite the harsh economic climate.

He said: “Some of the largest employers have seen significant improvements in the quality of the apprentices entering the industry and a major factor in all of that has to be aligned to Brinsworth Academy of Engineering.”

The academy has generated 150 vacancies so far this year and has 280 learners currently on training programmes.
