A SCHEME designed to combat youth unemployment in Sheffield is appealing for businesses to sign up to take part.
Sheffield Council needs more employers to come forward for the Apprentice Challenge, backed by The Star, which is aiming to get a total of 200 unemployed 16 to 18-year-olds in the city into traineeships over two years.
Candidates are given pre-employment training and matched with suitable businesses. The scheme part-subsidises an apprentice’s wages and gives follow-up support.
Laura Hayfield, Opportunity Sheffield’s programme manager, said: “We have reached 150 but we need more employers. We’re hoping they will use the new year to think about taking on a trainee.”
