Council ‘excuses’ attacked by traders in parking row

TRADERS have criticised Sheffield Council for refusing to allow parking on an old school site due to building work – when none was taking place.

Shopkeepers at Millhouses asked the council to open up the old Abbeydale Grange school car park to help shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.

At the time, Coun Bryan Lodge, council’s cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “In the run up to Christmas, we will be working at the school site with heavy machinery as part of plans to move the site on to the next phase of development. Parking would be totally unsafe.”

However, Millhouses Traders’ Association said that no work took place.

Jane Bradley, who owns Perfectly Dressed clothing boutique in Millhouses, said: “We feel let down, it was all excuses from the council on this issue.”

Coun Diana Stimely, Liberal Democrat member for Ecclesall ward, said: “Labour’s flimsy excuse for not helping with parking issues has been exposed as a sham.”

Coun Lodge said surveys took place at Christmas, while the site has no wardens or lighting.
