Torres Pumps is celebrating clinching a prestigious order for technologically advanced pumps, destined for a major Nigerian plant for storing Liquid Petroleum Gas.

Securing the contract has taken eight months and involved generating files full of hundreds of pages of drawings and details to show the Sheffield firm and its local suppliers have the capability to make the safety critical pumps.

“It’s been a long, long time,” says company sales and production manager Dawn Torres, who secured the contract from Weatherford, the Swiss-based, multinational oilfield service and technology company.

“It started with one piece of paper. Now there are hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents, and, once you have got the order, there is just as much paper involved.

“Producing the information required is as much of a job as making the pumps.”

Not that Dawn Torres is complaining about that.

The 12 Torres Rotary Vane Pumps have to be capable of shifting more than 900 litres of Liquid Petroleum Gas in and out of giant storage tanks every minute at a pressure of two atmospheres.

They have to comply with ATEX regulations covering potentially explosive atmospheres and standards set by the American Petroleum Institute, in addition to meeting specific requirements relating to the development that Weatherford is carrying out on behalf of Nigeria’s Pan Ocean Oil Corporation.

Those requirements mean Brightside Lane-based Torres has had to modify patterns for the pump castings and redesign parts of the pumps.

The £81,000 order means work for local suppliers who make casings, bearing housings, relief valves and special mechanical seals for Torres Pumps.

Dawn Torres says the volume of work the company has been winning from the gases and special cryogenics sector is on the up.

“It’s a part of the market that is definitely expanding – a specialised area where we can contribute knowledge and skills and make sure the customer’s priorities are met,” Dawn Torres adds.
