Continuing rise in train trips revealed by rail regulator

Rail journey numbers are continuing to rise across South Yorkshire according to latest statistics.

The Office of Rail Regulation said that overall numbers of train trips in the Yorkshire region rose 3.4 per cent overall in 2011/12 on the previous year, to 62.9 million.

But certain routes had a bigger rise, with journeys between Yorkshire and the north west - including Sheffield to Manchester - growing by 7.6 per cent. There are plans for a third hourly service between the two cities.
