Scores of Sheffield residents made their opposition to a 93-home development clear at a public meeting.

The Upper Don Action Group called the event to voice concerns about plans by Hallam Land Management to build on fields between Hollin Busk Lane and Carr Road, near Royd Farm between Stocksbridge and Deepcar.

The firm has not yet submitted a planning application, but has asked Sheffield Council whether it needs to carry out an environmental impact assessment, and more than 100 objections have so far been lodged.

About 80 people turned up to Saturday's meeting at the Castle Inn, Bolsterstone, with most opposed to the development, according to action group chairman John Hesketh.

He said: "Residents certainly voiced their opposition to the proposed ‘new village’ planned for the green field site at the junction of Hollin Busk Lane and Carr Road. One in attendance described the meeting as 'lively'.

"Speaker after speaker criticised the siting of the proposed development.

"The most common concerns focussed on traffic problems; impact on the Green Belt; eating into the countryside; destruction of wildlife habitats; adverse impact on the nearby National Park; and negatively affecting the listed buildings at the adjacent Royd Farm."

A sub-committee of the action group was set up to oversee a campaign against the development.

The Star has contacted the developer for comment.
