Expanding of the geographical area of the Top 100 SMEs to cover the whole of the Sheffield City Region has resulted in the introduction of two new geographic areas to supplement the existing town and city-based divisions.

North Derbyshire brings together businesses in towns like Matlock, Alfreton, Ashover and Buxton, but excludes Chesterfield, which continues to have its own separate ranking.

Meanwhile North Nottinghamshire brings in Mansfield, Worksop and parts of Retford.

Alfreton-based commercial vehicle dealers and haulage contractor Nesform head the table of North Derbyshire’s most profitable companies, ahead of the Cornerstone Consortium, parent group for magazine and periodical printer Buxton Press.

The firm, twice named Printing Company of the Year, lays claim to being the largest sheet-fed magazine printer in the UK and specialise in the cost-effective production of short to medium run full colour periodicals.

The company prints more than 400 magazine titles and in excess of 55 million publications each year. Third placed John Smedley traces its history back to 1784, when Peter Nightingale and John Smedley opened a mill just 13 years after Richard Arkwright had developed the first water-powered spinning mill.

The company claims to be the world’s longest running factory-based manufacturer and its knitwear brand is familiar nowadays in boutiques, department and fashion stores around the world. The company has won numerous awards for export achievements and sells to more than 30 countries, with Japan being its largest export market

Another long-established textile firm to feature among North Derbyshire’s most profitable SMEs is specialist webbing manufacturing company Bowmer Bond Narrow Fabrics

Founded in 1795, Bowmer Bond makes webbing for a wide range of applications, including automotive, aviation, marine, medical, military, leisure and sport, selling to more than 25 countries around the world.

Fourth-placed Derbyshire Aggregates celebrates its 30th anniversary next year.

The firm started out supplying local merchants, but now it sources and exports material around the world for a wide range of applications, including landscaping, decorative surface dressing pebble dashing, flooring and construction aggregates.

Derbyshire Aggregates is also one of the country’s largest suppliers of rock salt.

The company has been involved in projects at a number of prestigious locations, including Buckingham Palace, Chatsworth House, Lord’s, Heathrow and Manchester Airports and Meadowhall as well as supplying material for UK motorways.

Other companies among North Derbyshire’s most profitable SMEs with connections to the minerals industry include MMD Group and the Long Rake Spar Company.

MMD group specialises in mineral feeders and sizers for applications industries ranging from aggregates and industrial minerals to waste processing and recycling.

Long Rake Spar supplys quality specialised decorative aggregates for the flooring and walling sectors of the construction industry.
