New innovations explored by the Sheffield-based Patient.co.uk team include a series of apps, developed in partnership with award winning Sheffield software developers 3Squared and as part of a competition involving Sheffield University students.
Collaboration with 3Squared has resulted in an app which contains all Patient.co.uk’s popular information leaflets on medical conditions and enables users to locate the nearest GP, dentist, pharmacy or emergency clinic.
Ben Foster says a fifth of Patient.co.uk’s users are accessing it from a mobile and the app was downloaded by more than 30,000 people in the month since it has been available, making it the most popular medical app on the iTunes site.
Software being developed as part of the student competition include Apps that help:
People compare their alcohol consumption with official recommendations.
Insomniacs to keep a sleep diary for their doctor.
Migraine sufferers to see whether particular foods or activities could be causing attacks.
The the team is also considering developing a symptom checking app that could aid diagnosis and has signed up Dr Sarah Jarvis from the BBC TV magazine programme The One Show to write a blog for its new site.
