Although its operations are based at Barlborough Links, Bolsover Cruise Club hasn’t previously featured among the Star Business/Barber Harrison & Platt Top 100 SMEs because its registered office is at Shirebrook.

However, this year’s expansion of the geographical area covered by the Top 100 puts the company firmly in third place overall and top of the North Nottinghamshire table.

The company started out in the 1960s as a joint travel and estate agency, but by the 1970s it had focused on the holiday business. In the 1980s the business focused on cruise holidays, becoming the leading individual agent for P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises – a place it retains today.

By the 1990s Bolsover was only dealing with cruises and in 1998 the firm opened its Cruise Centre at Barlborough Links, three miles from its original Bolsover site.

The business continued to grow, expanding into even larger premises in 2005 and becoming a limited company the following year.

Today, Bolsover Cruise Club lays claim to being the UK’s top Cruise Agent dealing with premium cruise brands that include P&O, Cunard Line, Princess, Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity, Fred Olsen, Seabourn, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas.

Bolsover Cruise Club isn’t the only travel company topping the rankings of North Nottinghamshire’s most profitable companies. Fifth- placed Johnson Bros (Tours) was founded in the 1950s and lays claim to being the leading coach tour operator in the Midlands, offering everything from shopping breaks and city breaks to luxury tours and mobile homes in the South of France.

North Nottinghamshire’s second most profitable SME, Robinson Healthcare was founded 174 years ago by John Bradbury Robinson, a retail chemist, based in Chesterfield, initially to make pill boxes, moving 16 years later into making surgical dressings for casualties of the Crimean War.

Over the years, Robinson’s has grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of healthcare products.
