Entrepreneur Julia Gash, above, has welcomed Nick Clegg’s announcement of plans to charge shoppers 5p for every plastic bag they use.
Julia is the founder of Bag It Don’t Bin It, the Sheffield firm which has turned the production of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags into a mini creative industry.
Her firm’s sales rose by 35 per cent during the past 12 months, but not every one has got the sustainability message.
“Not so long ago, I was behind a man in a queue at my local supermarket when he bought a packet of cigarettes and insisted on taking a plastic bag. Because they are so freely available it makes us lazy and stops us thinking of a sustainable alternative,” she says.
