As we prepare to honour the city region’s highest achievers, Rob Moore, head of business legal services at Sheffield solicitors Taylor&Emmet LLP, celebrates the continued growth of our world renowned manufacturing sector...

We are honoured to be sponsoring the City Region Business Awards’ manufacturing category for a second consecutive year.

The shortlisted firms – MGB Plastics, United Cast Bar, Bowers Electrical and Prior Marking Technology – have little in common in terms of products, but all are leaders in their fields, both nationally and internationally.

Taylor&Emmet enjoys close links with local small and medium-sized enterprises, many of whom are manufacturers of one kind or another and our involvement in the sector is as diverse as its output.

We work for companies handling high value materials, engineering projects and automotive technology and we were really pleased to be added to the NG Bailey legal panel earlier this year.

Despite the variety of goods produced and geographical spread of customers, local manufacturers face similar legal issues.

These can range from the management of supply chains, to pricing, product liability and protection of intellectual property.

The manufacturing quality for which this region is renowned has to be reflected in the advice we impart and I believe the services offered by our specialist solicitors are as much “Made in Sheffield” as the products affiliated with the iconic brand.

At the recent Cutler’s Feast, Juergen Maier, chief executive of Siemens UK, encouraged local manufacturers to export, invest, innovate and educate for long term success.

Taylor&Emmet has certainly taken this advice on board. Although we don’t export, we do advise businesses outside the city region.

We were also one of the first local firms to recruit legal apprentices and we merged successfully with Cockertons in Bakewell last year, expanding our range of services to individuals and businesses.

These are exciting times for the city region. Factory 2050 will make Sheffield the centre of manufacturing in the UK, we are becoming home to more internationally renowned brands and the development of medical and digital companies is further enhancing our reputation for excellence.

Taylor&Emmet is proud to be involved so closely in the sector and we are extremely pleased to be supporting this year’s cream of the crop.

I wish all four shortlisted companies the very best of luck.
