How many times have you stood in a changing room staring at yourself in despair and declared ‘I’m just going to make my own clothes’?
Personally, I’ve done it hundreds of times. Wailing to my girlfriends about ill-fitting jeans I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve said I’m going to start my own fashion label so I can tailor clothes to my shape. Sadly, I don’t have the skills - but one Sheffield lady did.
Ilona Cash, aged 31, has just launched her own fashion brand Ambi after spending years frustrated that she couldn’t find clothes to fit her classic pear shape.
She said: “Ambi was created as a new solution to a very old problem. The world is filled with women that are one size on the top, and a different size on the bottom, and an industry that doesn’t cater to them. Well that stops now.
“With Ambi, I’ve created a capsule collection of ten items that look great and, most importantly, are dual-sized.
“I’m an eight on the top, and a ten on the bottom, a classic pear shape. This has meant me either buying bigger, drowning my top half to accommodate the bottom, or wearing things that are too tight and unflattering on the bottom, which no woman wants.
“I spent years trying to shrink my bottom half at the gym, but it just wasn’t going to happen and, at the end of the day, I’d just rather buy clothes that fit me.”
Ilona, who has a fashion degree and ten years experience working in the fashion industry, decided to create clothes for herself that took her dual-sized figure into account, but that has now grown in to a successful business.
“It wasn’t until I started talking to friends and family members about my pear-shaped troubles that all of these women came forward and said oh, me to and I started to think that there was a real market for this.
“I started pulling a capsule collection together, things I thought every woman needs – a little black dress, a grey work dress, a floral summer dress, a denim dress.”
Ambi is a unique business, with no other labels providing dual sizing - even though it will be of benefit to millions of women.
Ilona added: “We’ve been inundated with orders from across the UK, which has been thrilling.
“I already have plans for a second collection, plus we’ve had a lot of women asking if we’re going to build a collection for women that have the opposite issue to me - so those who are bigger on the top than the bottom - and we are.
“There’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to the female body, so it’s about time the fashion industry stopped trying to fit everyone into clothes with these same dimensions.”
The Ambi brand is designed to fit women from size 6 to 18, and the pieces range in price from £59 to £149.
