A CHARITY which helps people with hearing problems has chosen a South Yorkshire firm’s innovative security device to protect staff working on their own.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to everyday sounds like door bells and telephones as well as danger signals in the home, work-place and in public buildings.

A large number of the charity’s staff are based at home or work out in the field supporting deaf people, volunteers and fundraising.

Now, they are all going to be protected by Dinnington-based Connexion2’s SoloProtect service, which includes the company’s Identicom protection device for lone workers.

The Identicom looks like a normal name badge.

However, it incorporates mobile communications technology that enables to raise the alarm if they are threatened or anyone tries to tear the badge off.

The badge transmits a signal that tells staff at a security monitoring centre exactly where the worker is and allows them to listen in and record what is happening with such clarity that it can be used in the courts in evidence.

One member of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’s staff has already had good reason to be grateful for SoloProtect and the Identicom device.

“Whilst being trialled, one of our staff had cause to press the red alert button on Identicom and said afterwards how much safer she felt knowing that support was just a touch away. It also gave us the opportunity to trial the service in a live situation,” said Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’s head of human resources, Natasha Edward.

“We have received extremely positive feed back from our staff, who have all stated that they feel so much safer knowing that they can open up a connection to the monitoring centre if they feel threatened and that they can respond to the situation, escalating it to a police response if necessary.”
