Local businesses could be saved millions of pounds by Highways Agency plans to turn the M1 in South Yorkshire into a ‘managed motorway,’ according to Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber believes work could begin soon on the programme. It will use detectors under the road to pinpoint slow moving traffic, linked to technology that controls traffic flow by setting variable speed limits, opening the hard shoulder to traffic to ease congestion and closing lanes if there is an accident.
Chamber executive director Andrew Denniff said “We are fully supportive of this scheme which we believe may save local businesses millions of pounds owing to improved connectivity along one of the major transport arteries in the country.
“With the road network becoming increasingly congested and the reliability of journey times becoming harder to ascertain for businesses, this scheme will hopefully improve this situation – particularly during the morning and evening peak.”
