Sheffield University student Carly Williams had a close encounter with the Prince of Wales at a star-studded awards ceremony in London.

The 21-year-old won the Samsung young achiever of the year award at the event organised by The Prince’s Trust.

After 13 years in care, Carly struggled to live independently, shut herself off from the world and needed medication to help with depression.

However, today she is studying social work at the university and is brimming with confidence after completing the trust’s team programme.

Other awards categories honoured those who had achieved in the community, studies and in business and enterprise.

Stars at the event included Joan Collins, actor and former Sheffield schoolboy Dominic West, Ben Kingsley, Jeremy Irons, singer Pixie Lott and The X Factor winner Sam Bailey.
