Apprenticeships are booming in Sheffield – with a 54 per cent increase in places over the last three years

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, said the number of apprenticeships created since 2010 in the city is now 12,270, including at leading firms such as metals giant Firth Rixson.

Mr Clegg revealed the figures as he launched a One Million Jobs for a Stronger Economy campaign to make an impact on the current 2.5 million unemployment total.

Many of the new opportunities are to come through apprenticeships.

He said: “We’re already creating jobs in manufacturing by investing billions in science and high-tech manufacturing.

“But we’re determined to do more – starting with giving apprenticeships a major push. It’s an old idea to help build a new economy.”
