Robin Hood Airport is a focus for unmet business demand for flights to European hub airports,” according to Sheffield University Management School.

Opportunities exist to develop services to locations such as Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Belfast, the Latvian capital, Riga and the tourism destinations of Venice and Crete.

Andrea Genovese’s colleague, Dr Niraj Kumar points out that when KLM launched a service to Amsterdam from the now defunct Sheffield City Airport it was the best start-up the airline had ever had.

Research showed local businesses were particularly keen to see flights from Doncaster to Paris, and Amsterdam.

“Business people would distinctly like to see a direct flight to Amsterdam or Paris which would connect to Asia,” said Dr Kumar.

“A Paris connection would be good for the ever increasing student population coming from China and India.

“There is a huge population of overseas students, 60,000 students, especially coming from China and India, but also Africa.

“At the moment all the students come via Manchester Airport.

“Think about the contribution to the wider economy that the airport could make if it was catering for those students.”
