Transport giant FirstGroup, which operates services across South Yorkshire, has been rapped by the advertising watchdog for making ‘misleading’ claims about bus emissions.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) stepped in after a TV promotion sparked a complaint over its environmental message.

While it stated ‘we love low emissions’ and that FirstGroup buses produced less carbon dioxide than conventional buses, the watchdog found its fleet did not meet Government criteria for low-emission vehicles, which ASA said ‘most viewers would expect’ the definition to mean.

The ad, broadcast on Friday, September 23, has now been banned.

ASA said FirstGroup did not believe the Government definition was widely known.
