CARS are finally back on the North Bridge after 10 years.
But the bid to use the older of the two Doncaster town centre’s bridges to help relieve congestion was getting off to a slow start yesterday.
Thursday was the first time in a decade that vehicles other than buses and taxis were legally allowed to turn off Trafford Way and head north on the outbound carriageway instead of having to negotiate St George’s Bridge to cross the canal and River Don.
But in the space of 30 minutes in mid-afternoon, The Star counted only 24 cars and vans travelling over North Bridge, and a trio of police cars.
By 4pm that had increased to 20 vehicles over 10 minutes.
