SHEFFIELD Council has chosen construction firm Amey as the contractor for its £2 billion upgrade of roads and pavements - and work will start in August.
The firm was chosen from a shortlist of two, with rival bidder Carillion losing out.
It will take five years to revamp all roads and footpaths in the city and the contract also includes maintenance to a high standard for the following 20 years.
Some 500 council staff will be transferred to Amey and 170 new jobs created.
