Jobs could be axed, travel centres closed and paper timetables scrapped in new plans to save £7.6m.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive is also considering cleaning bus shelters once every three months rather than every month, and reducing cleaning at transport interchanges, to save cash.
Cash-strapped local councils, which fund a levy to the executive, have asked for it to be reduced by ten per cent.
A report says the executive has proposed savings of £4.7m, which include closing information centres at Sheffield, Meadowhall,Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham.
The facility on Arundel Gate in Sheffield city centre would operate as a bus interchange only and be staffed by customer service assistants.
Passengers would have to use ‘self-serve’ kiosks and 27 staff could lose their jobs.
Up to 50 jobs could be affected in total.
The report says ‘this loss will be hardest felt for the elderly and disabled where the re-assurance of such help from a dedicated resource may assist in providing the confidence of such persons to travel’.
Paper timetables would be removed to save £118,000 and a ‘travel choices team’ that promotes public transport travel would close.
Cleaning staff at interchanges will be reduced from two in the daytime and one in the evening to one then a mobile cleaner.
The executive has said no further changes will be made to concessionary fares for children, disabled or elderly people. But its workforce will have reduced by 45 per cent since 2010.
David Young, deputy interim director general, said: “It is with regret we have to put forward these proposals. We realise they depend on some customers changing the way they find information and how they buy tickets and apply for passes, but we feel these savings are necessary to protect bus services and concessionary travel.”
A decision will be made on January 5.
